Bridget and Kenny’s wedding was the perfect example of why I LOVE backyard weddings in a family home. From the moment I arrived, the whole day felt so relaxed—no rushing from place to place, just an easygoing atmosphere where everyone could be present and enjoy the moment. Since the wedding took place at a family home, everything felt extra personal and meaningful. The space was filled with so many cherished memories, and now their wedding day got to become a part of that history as well.
One of the best things about backyard weddings is how comfortable everyone feels. Guests aren’t wandering around trying to figure out where to go next—they just settle in and naturally know where things are and where they need to go. This allows guests to feel at ease and have real conversations, catching up in a way that doesn’t always happen at more traditional venues. I love seeing that sense of comfort and connection that just happens so naturally at backyard weddings like this!
As a photographer, I also love how this type of setting pushes me to be extra creative. Every home is different, which means the lighting, the layout, and all the little details of each house are so unique (and unpredictable!). When I open the door, I never know what the environment will be like, which leads to a lot of out of the box creative thinking for framing and lighting things artistically. In fact, some of my favorite wedding images of all time have been at backyard weddings, because of how they push me to be extra creative!
Also, if you tend to love more documentary style imagery, a backyard wedding is absolutely going to help facilitate these kinds of images. The in-home setting of a backyard wedding just naturally creates a groundedness in the photos; and the setting allows for all of those candid, unfiltered moments that tell an honest story about the day.
Bridget and Kenny’s wedding was the perfect reminder of why backyard weddings are such a great choice when you’re planning a wedding. They’re personal, relaxed, and filled with genuine connections. If you’re considering a backyard wedding, I can’t recommend it enough!
