This San Diego beach engagement session was the perfect mix of playful, romantic, and good old fashioned carefree fun. With that breezy summertime-at-the-beach kind of feel, the wide open coastal views, and a genuinely fun connection between these two, it was a perfect combination for a playful day on the sands of Del Mar.

There are a number of gorgeous beach locations in San Diego, but for this dreamy session we headed to Del Mar: a quiet coastal gem known for its picturesque coastlines, iconic oceanfront features, and relaxed atmosphere.

From the very first moments we stepped onto the sand, the whole session had a lighthearted, truly happy energy. What I love about this spot in Del Mar is that it easily incorporates a little of everything into the backdrop of your engagement photos: soft sand, coastal cliffs, bright blue open skies, and a cute little nearby street where they were able to ride their beach cruiser!

What made this session especially memorable was just how playful these two were together. Their entire engagement session unfolded in a way that felt relaxed, romantic, and true to them and their connection. That kind of energy always adds so much life to photos, especially when we are in a location with plenty of room for movement!

Starting the Session on the Soft Sands of Del Mar

We began this engagement session on the soft sands of Del Mar. There’s something about starting barefoot by the ocean that helps couples settle in and feel comfortable right away. The beach gave us plenty of space to move around, laugh, and capture all of those fun in between moments that often end up being the most meaningful.

For the very first part of the session, the couple rocked some sunglasses, which I think helped lean into the fun and casual vibe while giving a hint of cool, editorial style to their images. It’s that exact combination that made this San Diego beach engagement feel so special–it had style, but it still felt completely personal.

One of the standout moments from the first half of the shoot was taking photos up on one of Del Mar’s classic lifeguard towers. Lifeguard towers are such an iconic staple of Southern California beaches, and incorporating one into your engagement photos instantly adds a nostalgic, coastal touch.

As we moved through their beach photos, the soft sand and open shoreline created a simple, clean backdrop that kept the focus on their connection. Some of my favorite moments from this part of the session came from the way they interacted so naturally with each other. The main event of this engagement session was definitely the couple’s sky blue beach cruiser.
