Get rid of the plastic hanger right away and remove any plastic or paper trash that comes with your dress before you bring it to your getting ready space. David’s Bridal is notorious for having so much paper and plastic waste when it comes to their dresses. Get rid of all of it before the wedding day please 🙂 I have tricks up my sleeve to make sure your dress hangs in a flattering way. I don’t believe you have to have a fancy hanger with your married last name or a fancy bow to make your dress shots look nice. I actually forgot my special hangar at home on my wedding day, we ended up using a hotel wooden one. But a simple black felt hanger or a wooden hanger will do just fine if you don’t want/have a cutesy hangar. Keep in mind that the hangers with your name written out don’t photograph as well as you think they do and the letters are generally very difficult to read in photographs.
Don’t leave your dress in the plastic bag or garment bag. Take it out hang it somewhere safe when you arrive to your getting ready space. Let that baby breathe!! The dress oddly needs time to fluff out(unless it’s tight and a-line) and taking it out of the bag will help with that.Â
Have details that you want your photographer to photograph ready to go in one tote bag or I recommend your shoebox. Your shoe box is big enough to fit your shoes, your perfume, jewelry, the rings the invitation, your vows and really anything else that you want me to photograph except for your dress and your veil. I always appreciate it when my brides remove all the plastic packaging from a headpiece that they are going to wear or have all their jewelry like their necklace or earrings in a little pouch ready to go. The less work I have to do unwrapping all the little things, the more time I can spend getting really great shots. I also don’t want to interrupt your hair and make up process by asking you where your earrings are or where your shoes are. If everything is in one tote bag or shoebox then as soon as I arrive someone(Your MOH) can hand me the shoebox and I can get to work!
Tip 2.5 I love having all of the wedding bands during the getting ready portion of the day. I hate having to ask for you rings after the ceremony so I can photograph them. It’s especially difficult for the guys to get their rings off, so having all the bands beforehand is extremely helpful!
Ask your Florist when they drop off your bouquets if they can leave any extra flowers, scrap blooms/foliage that I can use to style your details. This will make your details look more high end and it’s always really nice to cooperate your flowers into the details.
Don’t forget about the grooms details! Some grooms are all about bringing the swagger on their wedding day. I love doing flat-lays of their details. Some grooms have expensive cigars, nice cologne, custom or family heirloom cufflinks, a vow book or a really nice watch that they want photographed. If you know getting these things photographed is important to your groom, make sure he has them ready in his shoe box as well!
Okay this isn’t really a tip but I just wanted to say it’s okay if you don’t have a lot of details or if you don’t want your detail’s photographed. Don’t feel like you’re going to bum me out if you have really simple details for your wedding day, I think that’s a good thing! It’s my job to document your real wedding day, not turn it into a magazine spread. Stay true to you and I will enjoy photographing every bit.
And there you have it! My 5 tips for making sure you get great detail shots on your wedding day!
